Travelling with Allergies
Patients cope with food allergy during their vacations in different ways. Almost one out of ten had allergic reactions (moderate or severe) while travelling on a plane. They are not pleased with the attention they got: only one third requesting special measures were properly listened. That may be a reason when planning the trip, because in many airlines food are served not warning allergic travellers.
Nut allergic patients choose their destination according his/her condition. For example, they do not feel comfortable in China due to its frequent custom of using nuts in the food. Language is also taking into account, because they believe it could carry difficulties.
Medical facilities immediate availabilaty in their vacations makes the patient «more daring» in situations considered to be «risky». For example a patient did not go to Kenya due to the distance to a hospital in case needed. And some patients go back to the same destinations because they feel secure, while they do not travel to new places if they do not feel comfortable and safe. A traveller tells she takes with her six epinephrine auto-injectors (instead of the usual two injectors) in case she can not find close medical assistance.
