Eye Allergy

Eye Allergy may affect 20% of the population

It is an immflamatory defense eye response against direct exposition to substances that cause allergy (allergens). Usually affects both eyes, althought it is not a severe disease.

Generally starts in the childhood, affecting both sexes equally. There use to be a family allergy background and it is usually accompanied by other allergic diseases (allergic rhinitis and/or asma).


The most frequent causes of the season seasonal allergic conjunctivitis are the pollen of grass and olive trees (mainly during spring time). House dust mites, mold spores and animals are the responsible of perennial allergic conjunctivitis.

The main symptom is eye itching. Watery eyes are also common: up to 90% of patients. Other symptoms are lid swelling, conjunctiva immflamation and secondary infection in the eyelids skin (mainly in children.

Other allergic diseases in the eye

Although not so frequent, other allergic conditions of the eye are vernal queratoconjunctivitis, atopic queratoconjunctivitis and the giant papilar conjunctivitis.
